About Our School

Bruce Shulkey Elementary opened in September 1958, with Mr. James D. Parnell as principal, fourteen teachers, and 514 students. The school was named after the late Bruce C. Shulkey, Assistant Superintendent of Elementary Schools.  At the time the school was opened, the Wedgwood community was new and rapidly developing. Shortly after the school opened, temporary buildings had to be moved in to accommodate the expanding school population.  For several years, Bruce Shulkey was the largest elementary school in Fort Worth. Bruce Shulkey will celebrate its 70th anniversary in September 2028.

Although smaller today with an enrollment of about 310, Bruce Shulkey continues to educate the neighborhood children in the Southwest Pyramid. Bruce Shulkey services students in Pre-K through 5th grade, an ECSE unit, and a SEAS unit. This year BSE will house a 0-5 unit for parents in need. With the belief that "we can do hard things", our Mustang faculty and students arrive daily to be better than the previous day.
